Athletes kneeling in response to police brutality
Though the action was first observed by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016, kneeling as a response to police brutality against African Americans became mainstream in 2017, first in the NFL and later across other sports. In a form of protest against the police officers and their perceived bias against people of color, athletes, cheerleaders, team owners, and the like began kneeling during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The motion invoked the rage of patriotic Americans across the country and President Donald Trump, who urged NFL team owners to fire kneeling players.
